I Love Butterflies!

…and here are a few pictures that I have taken of butterflies and moths in Sandia Park New Mexico.

This butterfly was identified as a Two-tailed Swallowtail by BAMONA, the Butterflies and Moths of North America project.  Here is a link to the recorded sighting: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/546574

Not a butterfly but a cool capture of a moth and a pretty weed

Wallow Fire Smoke Effects

The Wallow fire is now the second largest fire ever to engulf Arizona, and is now working on being number one. As I am writing this the fire is about 240 miles south of Albuquerque, NM and less than half a mile from Luna, NM. I am east of Albuquerque on the east side of the mountains and I can see and feel the effects of the fire. I can just imagine how bad it must be for everyone that is close to it. I have seen pictures of families leaving their homes, others who are watering down their homes to try and protect them as much as they can, and there are many animals in danger also. It is so sad. If the wind would just calm down!

It was a very nice out most of the day yesterday until the wind changed and brought the smoke back in our direction.

Pictures from Sandia Park, NM

Flag flying at the Sandia Park post office as the sun is going down yesterday evening. By this time yesterday 389,000 acres had burned, mostly in the Apache National Forest.

You can barely see the mountains

The sun disappears in smoke just a few minutes after this picture was taken.

This and That

Around my house this week

I was messing around out in the yard when I ran into this guy.  I stepped over it and I didn’t even know it until I forgot something and I had to turn around.  This was the first time that we’ve seen a snake in the yard, and it never crossed my mind that we would see one.

It was very slow moving.  I went in the house to grab my camera and to tell Rainey about it and when I went back to where it was it hadn’t moved much at all.    Rainey  grabbed the axe and was going to kill it.  It didn’t have rattles so I figured it was a good snake so we let it go.  I think it was a bull or gopher snake, but I’m not really sure.

I’m still watching the birds

This is an evening shot that I took of one of the hummingbirds.  There’s more than one hummingbird now.  I’ve seen at least 5 at one time.

This pair has been hanging out at our house since we first put the bird feeder up.

They loved playing in the water puddles after the rain.

We also have a pair of Ringneck doves that live here.

They are so cute!…and I hope to see baby doves this summer.

They even show up on our front porch sometime.

Our weekend started out ok, and then our  nice and sunny Saturday became overcast and cloudy and a little bit on the chilly side.

This flag is always flying…it’s a close up of the flag at the Sandia Post office which is next door to us.

Rick and I were going to plant the plants out in the garden this weekend and then decided to wait until next weekend.  It is suppose to drop below 40° here on Wednesday and Thursday. The plants are doing fine inside.  I have them in a bright spot in the kitchen and I take them outside sometimes during the day so they can get some sun.

My beautiful wildflowers…lol.

They are just weeds but still pretty in their own way….so I had to take the pic :)

Cassie heard that we were in a drought…so she is busy looking for water…lol…with her divining rod :)

A new week is about to start…so have a good one.

….and thanks for checking out my blog :)

Continued From Yesterday

A beautiful day to start a garden.

Here are some of the plants that we bought yesterday for the garden (my mother’s day present)

Rick just couldn’t stand it, he had to get out and start digging. He was going to wait and get a rototiller but once he started digging he said it wasn’t that hard.
Rainey got out and helped a bit too.
…Cassie is right in the middle of everything.  She wore herself out running around looking for her treasures and keeping them from us.  You can’t see it very well in the picture but she is guarding her 2X4 block of wood.
You would think Rick has had a garden before. He is doing a great job laying it out.
When I went out to check to see how the garden was coming along Cassie was still out there gaurding her piece of wood.
I think Rick is done for today.  It is looking good…that was a lot of digging!

I thought that he was done for the day.  He looked done…lol.

Now he is playing in the water to make sure the water is flowing right.
We can’t plant the veggies until next weekend. It is safe to plant when it doesn’t get below 50° and we’re still in the 40′s at night.
Cassie can’t stand it, she has to stay in the back yard now.  She got in trouble for tracking mud in the house :(

She is not a happy camper.

I’ve started dinner.  I’m baking orange chicken in the oven and I’m going to serve it with rice.  I know Rick will come in when it’s time for dinner for sure.  He has about 20 more minutes before dinner is ready.  He is playing in the mud now.

I hope your day was a good one.

Have a wonderful evening everyone.

Starting A Garden

What a nice day it was today.  We actually reached 80°.  It was a nice day as far as the weather,  but our day started off on a sad note. Someones dog got hit and killed right in front of our house. We thought it was our next door neighbors dog but no one was home to ask. Rainey went over to the fire department and they told her the dog was hit sometime last night and that they had called it in. That was very sad too see.

Rick and I went to our local swap meet in Cedar Crest this morning and we bought plants for our garden. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, cilantro, broccoli, cucumber, zucchini, and a zinnia plant.  The plants are already off to a good start.  We bought the zinnia because we were told they repel insects. I wanted to check to see if that was true so I googled it.  I found out that certain plants do repel bugs, and that some plants even enhance the flavor of other plants. Zinnias attract hummingbirds which eat whiteflies.  Basil repels flies and mosquitoes and improves the growth and flavor of tomatoes. The site Golden Harvest Organics has a lot of information about plant diseases, companion planting, what to do about insects, pest, and critters, gardening tips, and more.  I found out to keep cats and dogs out of the garden you can grind up grapefruit or lemon rind and spread it over the soil. That is just one of the tip, there is another 11 tips on the Golden Harvest Organics website.  Tomorrow Rick is going to steak out where to make the garden.

Besides the plants I got a great deal on a beautiful old kerosene lamp from the same person that was selling the plants.  I just love it and plan to actually use it.  It is over 100 years old. The burner has been replaced but that is normal for as old as it is. Plus I want it to be safe.

I will be adding pictures and information as we get our garden going. Also recipes and more when we harvest.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend :)
